Blackfly4 with Honey Stove

The newly arrived Blackfly4 stove from Mini Bull Design – fresh out of the box. I had left the wicks too long just to burn off the excess. It resulted in a 6-minute boil time (1/2 pint of cold tapwater). I was using the Honey Stove from BackPackingLight.co.uk and the Alpkit Mytimug titanium mug.

I can fit two meths containers inside the Alpkit mug, totalling 160ml of fuel (5 fluid ounces). I reckon 30ml for a hot meal (see previously), so that is 5 hot meals, all stored inside the cookset. I like having the fuel wrapped in titanium. It feels more secure that way.

Till it leaks! .... 5 hot meals, but what about brews and breakfast?. Must admit it is a dandy little thing.

Which is why the meths container is in a zip-lock bag too. I also make sure I avoid over-tightening to cut down on damaging threads.

Heck, we carry water in similar systems. But I suppose if it leaks, kit just gets damp, not soaked in flammable liquids.

I also carry my gas canister in the titanium cookset, also for additional protection.

As to brews - I just have one with breakfast, and one or two with evening meal.

... I have set the Blackfly4 with 1 fluid ounce against 1 pint of cold water. Not what it is really designed for ... but 19 minutes for a pint of cold water. I'll post video tomorrow, Martin.

19 minutes! my ETA solo does a brew in 45 seconds. I ain't got the patience for a stove like that.

LOL - yeah, every minute wasted means tectonic plate movement is making the peaks taller ;-)

But seriously, having to watch a stove in bad weather can be frustrating, and if you need hot water quickly in an emergency, it could be dangerous.

I haven't come across these circumstances myself, and don't carry enough towels to help with a birth, but I guess if there was hypothermia on the go ...

Oh, it was 6 minutes for a 1/2 pint. Enough for a brew and porridge.

In an other self-less scientific experiment, it was 10 minutes to heat up the oven tonight, and 45 minutes to cook the small bacon-wrapped sausages. 55 minutes in total! I could have boiled 2.4 pints in that time, and Martin could have heated enough for a bath!

...and probably enough water left over to have a cuppa whilst enjoying the bath ;0
